Yesterday we thought we'd take Alex to one of our favorite brunch spots, La Maison Des Tartes, where Timothy and I spent many Sunday afternoons while I was preggo making sure that (Alex and) I were well fed. In fact, the last time we were there was on June 30, the day Alex was supposed be born, so we were excited to go back and introduce him to the wait staff who had yet to meet him "out utero" (and maybe the pear brioche french toast had a little something to do with it).
As we pulled into the parking lot, we noticed that the building seemed dark and oddly deserted. We got closer to the building, 'til we could read the sign posted on the door that read "closed" and could see that the pastry cabinets usually filled with goodies were completely empty, that the coffee counter was lacking cups, condiments, and yes, coffee, and the cash register was no longer in its designated spot. NOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It can't be!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why, La Maison, why?????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!! Needless to say, we were sorely dissappointed by La Maison's untimely demise. I mean, seriously, what is the deal? What, people don't want to eat at a place where nothing on the menu starts with "Mc"? Are people afraid of a little culture? Live a little, people!! Expand your horizons!! Give brioche a chance!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok, I'm done venting. So we were out and about and pretty hungry at this point, so we decided that Plan B was Common Grounds, since they serve breakfast 'til 1 and have decent (if lukewarm) coffee. A entertained us (and the rest of the restaurant, especially the girls) until our food came, as usual, then choked down some saltines while we had waffles and home fries. He needed a little something to wash down the crackers, so we ordered a Mimosa in a kiddie cup for him to sip on. Just kidding. But we did get him some coffee, no milk, two sugars. Decaf, of course...Kidding again. But Timothy did let him suck some ice water out of a straw, which inspired a whole slew of new and hilarious expressions (none of which I managed to capture on film).
Common Grounds was good, but it is no Maison. Au revoir, La Maison. Vous serez manque...

4 more days!!! yay!!!
I have no idea what you said in French, but I am sorry I missed your fav. place. I love COmmon Grounds if for no other reason than old college memories.
I on the otherhand couldn't stand La Maison, and didn't understand what the big deal was. Give me The Little Bread Company any day! I am especially glad that I will not have to spend two Christmas parties within the same week there again. This made my day! Thanks Sarah!
