Grandma's or bust

Thursday morning we left Fayetteville for my parents' house in Peoria, IL. Plan was to wait 'til Alex woke up, presumably around 6:30am, then feed him, pack the car, and hit the road before his first naptime around 9. Wouldn't ya know, dude picked that morning to sleep 'til 7:30, so we scrambled around to get everything in the car and somehow still got on the road by 9 o'clock.

Sidebar: Anyone have any good tips on how to keep the sun out of the eyes of a backwards facing kid when it is glaring through the back window, besides Mom having to hold her hand up to his face for hours of northerly driving, risking arm crampage and severe crabbiness? If so, please advise...

I'll admit, we weren't particularly optimistic about how Alex would handle the car ride now that he is mobile, figuring he would go bug nuts about being stuck in a car seat for eight hours. Turns out we should've given the little guy more credit cuz despite two mini-tantrums when he was sleepy and obviously would've preferred flopping around in his own bed, in his dark and cozy bedroom, to being confined to a sitting position, in the bright and sunny car, he didn't throw a single hissyfit the whole time. Sure, he moaned and groaned now and then as he tried to get comfortable in his seat, but full blown fits were easily thwarted by way of distraction, with things such as...

...cell phones...

...DVD players (notice our attempt at "keeping the sun out", which failed because A kept grabbing the blanket and yanking it down to chew on it)...

...sippy cups...

...DVD players and sippy cups...

...crackers...

...and toys (check out those Dracula fangs).

We made a couple of stops on the way, for food, gas, a toilet, and good old fashion leg stretching, including this rest area somewhere in Missouri, where we discovered that Alex does not like grass, whether it is the prickly brown stuff at our house or the softer, greener stuff in Missouri.

Eventually we made it to Peoria, around 6pm, so A got a little car seat-free playtime in before bed. And then...
