So we had a great time at the ball game as I mentioned in my last post, due in part to the fact that A didn't seem to be affected by his unusual nap schedule. Since the game started at 1 o'clock - Alex's normal afternoon naptime - I pushed his morning back to 11:00 thinking that he would get a good nap, be awake and rested for the game, then probably take a cat nap on the way home from the ball park. And that's exactly what happened. What we didn't take into account was how his weird schedule might affect his nighttime sleep (cue ominous music)...
Rachel's flight got in late, around 10 o'clock, and Timothy went to get her from the airport. She had a smooth flight and made it from CO to TX without a hitch. Unfortunately the rest of the night didn't go so smoothly.
Alex had gone to bed at his usual time, around 7:30, and went right to sleep. Around 11:30, he woke up screaming his bloody head off, so Timothy went in to check on him. After trying to console him, to no avail, for several minutes, he called me in to help. Poor Alex. I don't know whether he had a bad dream or whether he woke up expecting to see his old room and was confused about where he was, but he was completely and utterly panicked about something. He was breathing heavy and fast, whipping his head back and forth, looking around his room...Even when Tim or I tried to cuddle him and calm him down, he remained tense and panicky and continued to be upset. After a sippy cup of formula, lots of cuddling, lots of rocking, and lots of crying, he finally fell asleep around 1am.
Poor Aunt Rach, who was forced to sleep on the air mattress outside of A's room, had to listen to his pitiful moaning and crying for hours, and as if that wasn't bad enough, her mattress deflated in the middle of the night because someone failed to tighten the valve properly.
So when are the rest of you gonna come visit us? Never? Oh. Maybe I should've kept this story to myself and sworn Rachel to secrecy. Too late now, I guess...
Anyway, it was a rough night, but apparently a fluke since he's slept fine since. Perhaps in an effort to make amends, Alex was a total ham for Aunt Rach.
Some of the best times with A are when he wakes up in the morning or after naps. Sleep definitely does his body good because he wakes up refreshed, full of energy, and ready to entertain.
It was especially important that he got plenty of beauty rest this weekend because we had various modeling gigs scheduled. You see, when Rachel comes to visit, its pretty much always a "working vacation". I guess that's what happens when you are a talented photog with a photo-obsessed sister with a photogenic son. Stay tuned for more on A's much-anticipated 1 year shoot(s)...
